Edwin Jackson’s pitching helps St. Louis Cardinals defeat Colorado Rockies 6-2 – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ starter, Edwin Jackson had a notable day with the ball as he threw just over five innings and surrendered two earned runs with an ERA of 4.62 in the Cardinals’ 6-2 win against Colorado Rockies at Busch Stadium, St. Louis on August 14.
Both teams got off to a quick and pretty decent start as Rockies’ batters added two runs at the top of first inning while Cardinals smashed four runs to get an initial 4-2 lead. Mark Ellis hit a one-run homer (370 feet) towards left-field to give Rockies
their first run. Carlos Gonzalez posted second run when Troy Tulowitzki drove a single-run shot to centre-field.
On the other side, Albert Pujols hit a two-run homer (435 feet) to left-field and Rafael Furcal scored a tie run. The third or leading run for Cardinals was taken by Matt Holliday when David Freese hit a double-run shot to deep right-centre. Freese added
fourth run to end the Cardinals’ four-run campaign when Yadier Molina doubled to deep left-field.
The pitchers limited the batters from second to sixth inning and did not give away any run. At the bottom of second inning, Pujols walked but at centre-field, Furcal flied out and Jon Jay struck-out. Similarly, Rockies’ left-fielder Eric Young Jr. was grounded
out to pitcher and at short-stop position, Ellis popped out without taking runs during fifth inning.
Todd Helton singled to left-field and Seth Smith singled off right-field at the top of sixth inning but the rest of Rockies’ batters missed some scoring chances and got out as at right-field Ty Wigginton flied out as Tulowitzki grounded out.
Cardinals got a 6-2 lead during seventh inning by taking two runs. Lance Berkman scored a single run when Molina drove a single-run hit towards right-field. Freese put the second or last run on score-board when Skip Schumaker singled off centre-field and
Molina moved to third base to end the seventh inning.
Pujols said, “We haven't played at all that well against Milwaukee. There's no tomorrow, just to come up with as many wins as we can and get a good streak going. Anything can happen in the six we have left in the season.”
The score-board was unchanged as the last two innings were score-less. However, Cardinals sealed the three-game series 2-1 after a decent win.
