The Venezuelan boxer Edwin Valero recently committed suicide in jail after he was incarcerated for stabbing his wife to death following an incident of domestic violence at a hotel. The late boxer and his late wife had a number of problems with domestic violence in the past with her being on the receiving end of a fistful of domestic violence that once left her with a collapsed lung and loads of bruises. It seems that some boxers cannot limit their violent streaks to the ring and a lot of them seem to bring their work home with them.
Boxers are violent people and a good number of them come from backgrounds where violence has been a big part of their lives, we seldom see the university educated boxer who is pursuing a career in boxing after getting his PHD because he found boxing more stimulating for his brain. A lot of boxers are calm and collected people who pursue their sport as professional athletes and then go home and have happy family lives too. The always smiling George Foreman is one boxer who comes to mind as the happy family man.
Then there are those deeply troubled individuals who cannot control their anger and take it out on those weaker than themselves, the people they are supposed to love and care for. These boxers have trouble keeping their violence restricted to the boxing ring and some are seen getting into brawls with bouncers outside clubs and most are seen beating their spouses on a regular basis. It is not fair to treat your wife as a punching bag just because the gym closed and you need more practice.
Edwin Valero was a troubled individual who had deep issues plaguing him. Some say that a car accident in his past left his brain slightly damaged, probably the part that says don’t beat up your wife, some say he had a bad case of road rage and some that he was drunk out of his mind and couldn’t control himself. Whatever his issues, he is hopefully in a more peaceful place now after taking his own life but let’s hope that he is getting some poetic justice somewhere with a huge creature pounding the stuffing out of him on a regular basis.
The real losers in this parental boxing match are the children, they didn’t deserve to be made into orphans by a sick individual; they probably should have been raised by the mother and now finally maybe the government will take care of them. It couldn’t protect their mother after the numerous times she was a victim of violence but maybe now the kids will be taken care of. We can all hope so and hope that the world will realise that some boxers need more than anger management classes, they need psychiatric help. Big Mike Tyson is a prime example of someone who needed help and obviously got it so hopefully he won’t be beating up random people and his future spouse any time soon.
