Edwin Van der Sar wants more silverware while playing for the Red Devils
There have been many sensational goalkeepers in the history of the game and there is one who is about to get his name in the books as well. The Dutch goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar is definitely a goalkeeper who is going to be a
part of the list in which all the legendary goalkeepers are going to be named.
This is not only because of his extraordinary performances, while being a part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United, but also because of his age. The Dutch goal stopper is currently 40 years old and is still giving his best
for the club and performing like he always did. Obviously, he does not have the same amount of speed that he did five years ago but the way he positions himself in front of goal is simply phenomenal. With a strong defensive line, Van der Sar definitely becomes
the one to look out for whenever the other team wants to score a goal.
There were speculations last year that he is going to leave Manchester United alongside Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville – that would simply mark the end of the “legendary” era of Manchester United; however, he along with
the rest did not. It is true that the Red Devils have a lot of young talented players coming up from their academies but the fact that Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville have emerged from the academy and have won eleven Premier League titles for the
Red Devils is simply sensational.
Edwin Van der Sar himself is a sensation for Manchester United. He was part of the club during the 2008-2009 season and that was the year when the Red Devils were at the top of the world. After winning the Premier League, they
went on to face their local rivals Chelsea in the final match of the UEFA Champions League. As the match was still tied after the ninety minutes, it went down to penalty shoot outs.
For obvious reasons, when the match moves to such a stage, the team expects the goalkeeper to shine and the Dutch star Edwin Van der Sar did exactly what was required of him during that time. He not only used his experience but
also his vision during that match and it was the star goal stopper who clawed off a penalty shoot from the French striker Nicolas Anelka.
This year is definitely going to mark the end of Edwin Van der Sar. After winning so much alongside Manchester United, he is finally going to retire from professional football. He still has the passion to play for the team even
at such an old age but after winning so many titles under Sir Alex Ferguson, he is expected to leave the club at the end of this year as the eleven times Premier League winners are expected to buy some new players this year.
After the whole Wayne Rooney saga, it was decided by the club that they are going to invest money into the club and buy some star players in order to win more trophies. The club has seen how Manchester City and Chelsea have invested
in their teams and how they became a lethal force in recent history. Similarly, now the club wants to buy a few replacements as the old players cannot perform at the same level anymore.
Knowing that he is going to be leaving Manchester United this year, the Dutch Star made sure that he sends the message out to his fans that he still wants to win during that one last year that he has, in order to make it the most
memorable retirement ever. Van der Sar said that he wants to get the Premier League title back for “sure” and added on to his quote by saying that the team just lost it by a single point last season and he does not want that to happen all over again.
About the UEFA Champions League, the Dutch goal stopper quoted:
"And of course we went out of Europe too early last season, so that has to be one of the focus points. When I was younger, I thought maybe I would finish in my mid-30s, but that’s a normal time to be thinking about it when
you are younger and for players at this level.”
That simply sums up how hungry the goalkeeper is to win trophies and even though Manchester United are the only side in the Premier League that has not suffered a loss, but still Chelsea are the ones leading the table. Can the
Red Devils kick off after Christmas like always? Well, only time can tell.
