The former Manchester United goalkeeper was disillusioned as Bert van Marwijk’s side bowed out of the competition from the group stages following three successive defeats.
Edwin van der Sar was left disappointed and shocked after Netherlands failed to progress through to Euro 2012 quarter-finals.
The Oranje entered into the competition in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ukraine-c3032 as one of the favourites to achieve European glory. However, they failed to meet expectations and bowed out of the tournament after suffering three defeats in a row.
Van der Sar, who donned the jersey of the Flying Dutchmen in 130 matches before hanging up his boots in 2008, confessed that the Dutch staged far from pleasing performances in all three of their Group B fixtures.
“I'm in shock. We had it coming. It was seen in the build up to the tournament. We were missing one or two players, some just returning from injury. Then during the tournament, different parts of the team didn't function together”, the 41-year-old Dutchman
was quoted as saying to the media.
The former Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper went on to insist that the Oranje need some major changes if they are to achieve success in future, and also stressed that Mark van Bommel’s place in the national squad is unjustified now.
“I think it's over for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mark-van-Bommel-c24148 in the national team. There will be one or two changes in this team. It's a disappointing result for us after what has been achieved in the past few years”, Van der Sar added.
After suffering defeats against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Portugal-c2984 by at least a two-goal margin.
Despite taking the lead early in the game, the Oranje failed to perform at their best, and went on to lose 2-1 at the end, thanks to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Cristiano-c9622 Ronaldo’s two brilliant strikes.
Van der Sar was all praise for the Flying Dutchmen’s first-choice goalkeeper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Maarten-Stekelenburg-c22998, but admitted that the overall performance of the team was below par.
“I think [Maarten] Stekelenburg did well, but our overall performance in the second half was below expectations”, the Dutchman concluded.
