Eero Lehmann satisfied with performance of two fencers in Women’s Sabre Grand Prix: Fencing Update
The Women Sabre Grand Prix concluded yesterday, May 22 at the Tianjin Gymnasium, Nankai District in Tianjin, China. The event covered only the individual competition of Senior Women Sabreurs.
The German National Coach, Eero Lehmann, happily returned with the two sabreurs, Stefanie Kubissa from Dormagen and Alexandra Bujdoso from Koblenz. Both these fencers, who had not gone beyond the mid-field placings in the last World Cup, made it into the
top-16 of the Grand Prix in China.
Kubissa ended up at the 10th rank whereas Bujdoso secured the 13th place of the event.
The German fencer Kubissa began with an undefeated 6-0 win in the qualifying round, in which she appeared for the first time. Later, she faced-off the Chinese sabreur, Xue Gao, in the top-64 direct elimination round and made it into the next round on winning
the lead point at 15-14.
In the Top-32, she fought the American, Dagmara Wozniak, and defeated her with a comfortable 15-11 score win, making it into the top-16.
Here she confronted the World’s Vice Champion, Olga Kharlan of Ukraine who defeated the German fencer by a 15-12, ending the voyage of Kubissa at the 10th rank.
On the other hand, Bujdoso fought against the Polish Matylda Ostojska in the top-64 elimination round and defeated her opponent with a close 15-13 win. Then she amazingly turned down the 2007 World Cup Champion, Gioia Marzocca from Italy with a head-to-head
fight at 15-14. However, she could not beat down the strong Russian Ekaterina Diatchenko and was defeated by 15-9, securing the 13th place in the competition.
Lehmann was satisfied with their performance and said, "Stefanie and Alex have both fought strongly and well defeated some very strong opponents. Both have a second Olympic Qualifier ahead to perform. "After this weekend, we want to continue to engage in
Ghent and New York,” he added.
The top podium place of the Grand Prix was secured by the Chinese, Min Zhu who defeated Russia’s Julia Gavrilova with 15-14. Moreover, the third place was a shared between Russia’s Ekaterina Diatchenko and Ukraine’s Olga Kharlan.
