What effect or chemical reaction will take place between Iron Mill Scale and H2SO4 ?

  1. Iron Oxide + Sulfuric Acid = Iron Sulfate + Water or

    (FeO) + (H2SO4) = (FeSO4) + (H2O)

    Are you trying to remove the scale from iron?

    If the scale is covering the iron the acid will perform the same reacton on the underlying iron even faster and produces H2 which according to the below article expands and pops the scale off of the iron.

    Also according to the article, HCL will attack the scale but not the underlying iron.
