Question:

Effective odds?

I have recently read The Theory Of Poker by David Sklansky and have stumbled upon the effective odds section. In his examples he seems to use limit hold'em, however my question is whether or not effective odds apply to variations of poker beyond limit and whether it can be applied to no limit. Thanks in advance.

  1. Effective odds is different in No limit then Limit as the bet sizes aren't fixed.

The simple way of using effective odds for No limit is just calculating the odds for making your hand on the turn as you are effectively only paying for one card as your opponent is likely to bet again on the turn.

I only use odds for hitting on the turn or river during all in situations.

  2. I would think the same principles apply to no limit, however I highly suggest Daugherty & McEvoy's "No Limit Texas Hold 'Em" (Cardoza Pub)

It has a similar section and is a great reference for beginner-intermediate players.

  3. Effective odds are the same as expressed odds, simply what the pot is laying you.  As I'm sure you know if the pot is $50 and the bet is $10, then you're being laid 60:10 or 6:1.  6:1 is your effective or expressed odds.

This concept is exactly the same in every form of poker.  You calculate your odds of hitting outs, compare it to the odds the pot is laying you, make adjustments for implied odds (future bets you may win after hitting your draw) and decide whether to continue with the hand.
