Question:

Effective treatment for shin splints?

I started 2-a-days last week and about the third day into it I started having sharp pains just below my knee...I had a scrimmage Saturday morning so that gave me about 36 hours of rest. Then today during warmups it was agitated again. I was told rest is the best thing for it, but I can't take a break... is there anything that I can do that will help prevent it from getting any worse?

  1. Rest is a very good thing. If you don't want to miss a scrimmage or practice or anything, do this when you have the time to rest. Try applying ice and then heat. Sit around for a while with ice packs on your shins, maybe while you're sitting around watching TV. Then maybe get a heating pad or these things that you can set in the microwave that heat up, and put those on your shins. Before and after you practice or scrimmage try walking around on your heels for a while. Then walk on your tip-toes for the same amount of time.

I'm a cross country runner and I had shin splints when I would run and after doing those exercises, I haven't a problem. (Knock on wood) Hope this helps!
