I went to the doc for a UTI and he at first gave me a sulfa drug. It made me sick so he prescribed me Levaquin. About 3 hrs. after taking it, I started to feel really weak, dizzy like I was about to pass out, my hands got really sweaty, I lost my appetite, and I just felt really bad overall. Are these a side effect of Levaquin. If so, is it serious side effects??

  1. well, in my country we use different flouroquinolone antibiotics and we don't have levaquin. Its data sheet seems to suggest it could cause central nervous system effects although I've never seen them in the ones we use like ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin. The real question always is :

    1) Is my infection causing the general malaise or..

    2) Is my treatment causing the malaise

I think you'd have to phone back your doc and see what he thinks. A severe UTI would leave you very febrile and in pain too so you don't want to stop the antibiotic without an alternative Sometimes a simpler antibiotic might work as the flouroquinolones are active against every bug possible....this is why he chose it, but a good penicillin one might suffice too, provided you're not allergic. Are you dehydrated ? ...try sipping water slowly to maintain fluids  without upsetting your stomach

  2. My husband was on Levaquin for 6 weeks and didn't have any side effects at all. If you do a search for this drug you will find all kinds of people with different side effects. It's actually kind of scary but then everyone reacts differently to medicines.  Check with your doctor and maybe see if he can prescribe something else for you.

  3. I was on Levaquin (intravenous and pill) for over a month and did not have anything like you describe.  Perhaps you are allergic to that type of antibiotic.
