Im using an Anschutz 1907 smallbore target rifle (.22) I like the little thing for playing aorund with, and its crazy accurate. Anyhow, I bought a box of .22 LR subsonic rounds to see if just how quiet they would be. There was some difference, but i was a little dissapointed.

Anyhow if anybody has had personal experience firing a .22 bolt action with a quality suppressor attached let me know what you though about it. If you have a decible reading it would be awesome.

Thanks in advance!

  1. You will hear the click of the firing pin if you use a good supressor. I put my Griffin Armament Checkmate on a 10/22T with an 18" barel and using subsonic rounds you hear the bolt cycle and the round impact , but almost no report.....

  2. Question:  Effects of a suppressor on .22 bolt action rifle. ?

Answer:  Since you say your family runs a gun store then you know the legalize involved in acquiring a suppressor for your .22?  Assuming you're not in the USA and where you live suppressors are not restricted or outright outlawed find out from your family where and how you can acquire a suppressor for your .22.  With subsonic .22s the report will be reduced considerably.

The only hands-on-experience I've had with suppressors was with a professionally suppressed Beretta 92 9mm.  Even with subsonic ammo the report still sounded like a gunshot only not as loud.  Of course out of the closed-breech of a bolt-action rifle and in a minuscule caliber like the .22 your suppressor would work better.  I've seen (in my law enforcement career) illegally suppressed .22 single-shot rifles with home-made suppressors and firing .22 Short ammo that were so quiet all you heard was the firing pin striking the primer.  Back then .22 subsonic ammo was unavailable so the poacher used .22 Shorts.

  3. I have used a Gemtech Outback II suppressor on a CZ 452 bolt action .22.  Makes it sound about like an air rifle, maybe a little quieter.  Gemtech claim about 39 Db sound reduction with the Outback II.  With a properly threaded barrel it has no effect on accuracy.

  4. switching to subsonic doesn't really change the sound much at all...except if you are using a suppressor.

A quality suppressor can reduce the 22LR to basically sound like an air-rifle (which aren't exactly soundless...)

However, as with all things, quality costs money, you get what you pay for.
