  2. i don't have 9 effects.

however, living in calif, earthquakes are a concern.

if you look around the world at the results of earthquakes, you often see stone or brick rubble.

masonry doesn't do well in earthquakes.

in fact, in many quake prone areas, building codes specifically prohibit their use.

however, in many countries, there are no codes.

and brick and stone are more durable when subjected to rain, termites, etc.

it's unfortunate that each specific building material has both benefits, and drawbacks, there aren't any that are good for everything.

however, i often think that, if i'm going to have my house fall in on me, i'd rather it be wood than stone.

it's probably just psychological, wood beams in the head are likely just as deadly as stone, but it just seems better.

death toll- while not everyone has only one child, many families do because of the single child law.  With the death of some many children because the earthquake happened in the early afternoon, whole communities of children are gone.

structural damage (homes only)- an earlier answer mentioned how California has building codes and laws for earthquake preparedness, and many other countries do not-- here is an article, though it has probably been updated and revised http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24812230/

Flooding is also talked about in the last article mentioned above
