  1. Alex,

Your question is somewhat ambiguous.  I am assuming that you have a problem with possums, and wonder if efforts to eradicate the possums will have a bad effect on birds and plants in your yard.

How do you plan to get rid of the possums?  If you are using poison, then it is available to birds and other small animals (squirrels, chipmonks, cats, etc.) in your yard.  I would suggest buying or renting a live animal trap to catch the possums, and then taking them to a state park or large wooded area and release them.  I have done this many times with raccoons, which are a problem in my area.

If you poison the possum, he just may go under your house or into your attic to die, and that will give off a really unpleasant odor for awhile.  Trap & release is a much better option.

I actually like possums.  They are as ugly as sin, but are really pretty harmless.  If you confront them, they make a really ugly face and hiss at you.  They prefer to lumber away from a confrontation.

One time, I accidentally left my patio door open at night.  The next morning, there was a huge possum curled up on my kitchen table in a basket of apples -- many of which he had eaten.  I tried to get him to leave, but he just made an ugly face at me and hissed.  We finally carried the kitchen table, possum and all, outside onto the patio.  He stayed in the apple basket until dark.

I hope I have answered what you asked.
