  1. some do work- and they have the same properties and work under the same rules as allopathic medicine (which is why it pisses me off when herbalists have people taking 20 different supplements, its just as bad as taking many drugs and herbalists half the time dont know what theyre talking about. ive seen several people have adverse effects from herbs, one person very severe).

a lot of them dont work because like the guy above said, many traditional medicinal herbs like digoxin (foxglove) have been integrated into allopathic medicine so whats left in the herbal section are a few good ones and lots of garbage that the drug companies dont want.

  2. weed works good !

  3. Remember a lot of pharmaceuticals are derived from herbs in the first place.   Many traditional herbs do have medicinal properties.  What science has done is identify the active ingredient (most herbs have dozens, even hundreds of chemicals) extract it and give it in a pure and more stable form.

Do any herbal products work as well as, or even better than pharmaceuticals?  No, that has never been shown to be the case.  Herbs certainly deserve continued investigation, the next cancer treatment may come from a traditional plant, like Tamoxifen which comes from the bark of the tropical Yew tree.

FYI....the term "allopathic" was derived by Sam Hahneman, the inventor of homeopathy.  It was used to describe what doctors of his time (late 1700's) did, as opposed to what he claimed homeopathy did.  At the time...doing nothing (homeopathy) probably was safer than the bleedings, purgings and bat guano poultices that passed for medicine.

The term is meaningless for today's science based medicine, and many doctors consider it a pejorative term, and it tends to be used that way by Alties.
