Question:

Efonica's security certificate expired?

I'm trying to use efonica but when I login IE 7 tells me there is a problem with the site's security certificate. If I click for details, it tells me the certificate is expired and that it was valid from 6-09-2006 to 10-17-2007.

Does anyone else get the warning? Is the site ok to use?

  1. Yes, I also get the security certificate warning on my IE7.

The best I can tell, the certificate is just expired and their IT dept is not on the ball to get it renewed.

I emailed them on this months ago and I don't know why they keep letting it lapse.  I would suggest you email their support dept and tell them of this.  I will do the same.  As they should not let this happen.... it is just laziness on the IT dept side.  They have to pay to have the security certificates renewed every year.

That said, the site is still secure when you conect HTTPS.  It is just that the certificate is up for renewal and they haven't gotten around to it.  What is important is that your connections are encrypted still, but IE7 is keeping you informed that the certificate is expired.

I have an account with Efonica.  I purchased $10 of calling credits from them back in June 2007 to test their service.  The softphone works good on my PC.  I just now made a test call and it is still working very good for me with good voice quality.

While writing this response, I also sent message to Efonica Support that they need to fix their security certificate.  I encourage anyone else to do the same.

I have seen this happen with other web sites, too.  It is either just ignorance or lack of awareness on the web masters part.

If this happens to me when visiting a web site that I am not famaliar with, then of course I would not trust it until I verify that the web site is legitimate and trustworthy.  To my knowledge, Efonica is trustworthy, but has a lazy or uninformed web master.  I hope they get it fixed, for their own good.  It doesn't present a good image.

That said, some web sites I visit don't have any security certificates at all.  And if a user isn't paying close attention, they may be sending personal or confidential information that is unencrypted.  In my opinion these web sites are negligent by not having HTTPS certificates in the first place.....
