I have a 3 yr old hackney poney and im trying to find a good bit for her.

I have been researching and i think the best bit would be a Egg-Butt Snaffle bit but im still not sure. I dont show her i only take her on trail rides and i want something mild. I didnt go with the loose ring snaffle because i dont want it pinching her lips. Any suggestions on bits?

  1. Egg-butt snaffle would be fine, as would D-ring, or loose ring. To prevent pinching her lips, try looking up Jeremiah Watt snaffle bits, since his bits are unique and don't pinch. Whatever bit you get, it's best to get sweet iron because as the name says, it tastes a little sweet to horses, rather than a piece of stainless steel in their mouths, which doesn't taste good at all. If you can find it, even better is sweet iron with copper inlays, because that will rust slowly and that tastes really good to horses. So don't clean it off! I know that it is a little salty, and just tastes good. Good luck! :)

  2. An egg-butt snaffle would suit grand. They are ideal bits for young horses.

  3. i would use an egg butt snaffle a young horse at my yard uses one and goes really well. i use a loose ring on my horse and it doesn't pinch at all.

  4. I'd go with a full cheek snaffle.  the cheekpieces encourage the horse to respond to turns, and keep the bit from sliding through the mouth.  A bit keeper can be used on the cheekpiece to increase the effect by placing a small amount of pressure on the poll, or the bit can be used without it.  I think it is the perfect bit for your purposes.

  5. An egg butt snaffle is usually the mildest bit. I think that is a good choice. Just make sure it fits her correctly and that you get a thick one so that it is gentle.
