Egypt beat Algeria on final day of first round – 2011 FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship
Egypt closed the first round of the 2011 FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship with a classic victory over Algeria on Sunday, August 14.
They built a score of 3-1 (25-19, 25-13, 20-25, and 25-18) and pulled off success. Baskent Hall in Ankara, Turkey hosted the match, where two neighbours fought for volleyball supremacy. None of the two teams could make to top-8 teams but Egypt was happy
to bag first win of the tournament on third day. They finished the first round in third position, while Algeria remained last in the group. In the next round, Egypt and Algeria will be included in Pool G and H respectively.
In Sunday’s encounter, Aya Elshamy of Egypt worked out impressive 19 points on ten attacks, two blocks, and 7 serves. Equally efficient and smart Captain Farida El Askalany contributed 14 points in Egypt’s score. On the other hand, Algeria’s Captain Celia
Bourihane put up great effort for her team and chipped in 15 points. She was second-best scorer of the match.
Louiza Bayou of Algeria opened the game with strong jump-serves and hit early points on brilliant aces. Algeria started out in a great way but Egypt suffered the set-back due to reception errors. Algeria picked strong lead of 8-1 up till the first break.
Somehow, Algerian team lost the rhythm and Egypt made a strong come-back. They chased the score and even left Algeria behind. Egyptian team cruised past to first-set win by sending 25-19 on board. Second set also came successful for Egypt and they extended
lead to 2-0.
Algeria bounced back in third set of the game and managed to steal some points from Egypt. Better combination of attack and defence allowed Algeria to take third set of the game. However, the happiness was short-lived as Egypt flabbergasted Algeria in the
following set. Fourth set proved to be the last set of the match and concluded with Egypt’s victory.
Ahmed Mohamed, the Egyptian Head Coach congratulated his team for winning the last match of preliminaries. It was indeed a good ending as the African girls will have positive energy in the second round of the tournament. The coach made a comment about the
match against Algeria. He said, “Algeria played well. We played very well in the first and second set but we lost our concentration in the third set. We succeeded to come back in the fourth set to win the match. I think this match was a little bit easier than
the final of the African championship where we won hardly 3-2.”
Egypt’s Captain Farida El Askalany was delighted about match victory. She hoped that the team will continue like this in the next round.
Algerian Coach Karim Imedjab did not hesitate in accept the fact that the opponents staged a better play. He said that Egyptian team played very well and deserved to win the match. Stating the cause of failure for his own team he described that his side
committed too many reception mistakes, which led them to a disastrous performance.
