Egypt beats Germany by 3-1: Day 2 - FIVB Men´s Junior World Championship
The second day of the FIVB Men´s Junior World Championship took place on August 2nd August in Rio de Janeiro and Niteroi. A Pool C match on Tuesday was played between Egypt and Germany at the Maracanazinho Gymnasium. The competition went on for
a total of four sets at the end of which the Egyptians were able to bag themselves their first win of the tournament.
The first set of the match was fierce as both the teams went in for the kill and tried their best to keep dominant. However, it was the Egyptian side that was able to emerge as victors over the Germans in the opening set. The Germans lost the second set
as well but rebounded in the third to give themselves a winning chance at the game. However, the Egyptian squad did not waste time in the fourth set and bagged it, sealing the match at the following final set scores: 26-24, 25-20, 22-25 and 25-23.
The coach of the Egyptian team, Mohamed Ellakany, made the following comments at the press conference after his team had won the match: “This was a very important win in order to qualify for the next round. I was afraid as nine of my players did not eat
in the morning (following the Ramadan of Muslims religion) and I did not know if they would have enough energy to play the whole match.”
On the other hand, the German coach, Stewart Bernard, expressed himself in the following manner: “The teams were nervous as both Germany and Egypt needed to win to keep alive. We made too many mistakes in the end of the sets again. The team fought, but it
was too late.”
The first set of the match saw the Germans take the lead at 8-4 but the Egyptians took charge by the time the second technical timeout was reached as they closed in the gap at 16-14 and brought the set to a tie at 23-23. The Germans could not stop the Egyptians
from bagging the opening set of the game at 26-24.
The start of the second set saw the Egyptians take the lead at 9-5 and cruise towards an easy win at 25-20 later on. Germany started the third set with determination and got into a leading position at 6-4 that extended till 12-8. They were eventually able
to overcome the Egyptians and secure the third set at 25-22. However, the Egyptians did not let the fourth set get out of their hands as they sealed the deal on it at 25-23.
The Egyptian player that played the most significant role was Mohamed El Askolany as he registered a total of 18 points for his team. On the German side, Bjorn Hohne stood prominent by tallying 16 points for his team.
