Egypt section - Why is being religious considered a "good quality" in a person?

In all developed modern nations especially the western ones people are accepted for who they are and their charecter rather than their believes.

There are interfaith relationships and nobody seem to care about what other beliefs in and have a free-mind compared to Muslim nations.

Why are people thinking this way in Islamic societies?

  1. Enti konti fein el modda elley fatet, ya5ti?

  2. coz all religions orders us with the same hi ethics and principals

so being religious means that u have hi standards of moralities and principals

  3. Religion and belief in God is and should be in your heart. This is why it frustrates me when I see these normal layman (people who aren't religious leaders) wearing a galabiya and having this huge beard etc. It is like they are showing off their religion. I think that is wrong. It is in your heart. Religion is a way for setting a consistent set of values and morals, but you don't need to be overly religious to achieve this.

Over religousness generates fantatics, who hates others who aren't like them. Who do you think all these terrorists are? They just become haters. Love all, and think as you wish.

Islam is compulsive, that is why it is seen as a "good quality"... in Egypt there is not such thing as atheism or agnosticism. Everyone has a religion.

  4. religious people suck

always hunting me with their crosses and bibles

    can't a vampire live in peace ???

sometimes im reading those marriage ads in newspaper .. "oreed rajolon / aw emra2aton motdayen w 3ala kholoq" .. hahahah .. i can't stop laughing =D

  5. To a certain extent yes it's considered a good quality

Being religious doesn't necessarily mean being stupid.

But it's not like I'm  going to refuse To marry someone whose not religious

  6. cuz arabs r the east not the west..

and it's known that east is the land of religions  (especially heaven religions sent by allah)

so we r religious by nature , since thousands of years..

islam is a religion that u cant separate from ur life , simply cuz it's the life allah wanted us to live (islam)..

and the more u r religious = close to allah and try to do the best things ever and avoid sins as much as u can..

the more tat u'll be a good muslim and a good person , the more ppl will respect u , the more our society would be better..

that's why we all try to be religious (by its right meaning) , i mean being religious is not by the outer appearance only , no , u 1st have to be good from inside and to treat ppl in a decent good way , and not to hurt or harm anyone..

respect all as long as they respect u..

always love & peace brought by islam..

  7. Because many people are shallow & judge others only by appearance, of course some religious people are kind people who respect others & follow certain morals, but that's not necessarily the case, many people are religious by appearance meaning that they perform they prayers regularly & have long beards while in the same time they don't follow the conduct of Islam as they insult others, they don't respect other ppl's opinions, & treat women like c**p.

I really don't know why people are fooled by the religious appearance & don't take the necessary time to know the real person.

  8. in islamic countries ,people respect the guy with beared and zobeba on his face more than other guys (opposite in the west)

and the veiled girl more than the other with loose hair (opposite in the west)

it is a human nature to judge from outside

but why the west think opposite from the islamic countries

because they think religion is something not the people are supposed to judge

it is your beliefs between you and your God

people they have the right to judge the way you look based on what you dress  but not your faith

  9. yo sup yall

yeah matter of fact in conservative muslim countries its a sad reality cuz the radicals are backward and want ppl to believe in their beliefs and live their way. they have no respect for other ppls beliefs, opinions wadsoever.

in fact religion is a personal belief and nobody should take it into consideration when judging a person.i am a freethinker does that mean i am a bad person or have bad charecter. i know many non religious folks they are real nice.

and i also know being religious aint a good quality radical muslims disgusts me religious person doesnt mean he has good morals and most of all DOESNT MEAN HE HAS A GOOD CHARECTER AND HEART.

    arite yall

    peace

EDIT TO ALDONBON: yo being religious has nothing to do with good morals.most americans  and europeans aint religious does that mean they not no morals.ps good morals doesnt mean the person has good charecter.so its pretty clear that u and other muslim radicals aint lookin into that.

EDIT TO SHAFAT: so wat u are sayin is that if the person aint a religious muslim he is bad or not as worthy as others?here in america man we dont think being religious christian is a "good quality".

i dont get why in islamic world radicals prejudge ppl based on their beliefs its really sad

  10. Your religious belief is part of who you are.

In countries you pointed out, it is not true that "free mind" part at all, many people are prejudice about you when you know you are a Muslim or Jew or whatever.

In Islamic countries people know what it does mean to be a good Muslim and is considered as good quality, may prove or disprove otherwise with time.

In other countries people may have different ideas about Islam, some know some don't, so they will ave their initial idea whatever it is ,and may change with time depending on the person.

Same goes for any religion, I was just giving an example.

At the end of the day whether you are religious or not people will prejudge anywhere.

    Edit:

@BUSH+Wa...: See what you did? you just toke part of my answer and added to it without me saying anything. I never said that people who are not Muslim are bad, you added this part yourself assuming that this is my thinking as a Muslim, you even called our views as Radicals because you didn't like it.

This just proves the fact that people everywhere are prejudice even in Western countries.

    .

  11. Wow.. first I have to say, as an american citizen I know many people in usa who are judgemental about religious beliefs...in fact recently when a muslim man became senator most of the christian senators attacked him in the press, even suggesting that his religious choice threatened national security, and that he should renounce his faith. ...before they took the time to know what a good person he is.

So it is really not something only hapening in muslim countries. When I walked into a grocery mart in my hijaab back home in st louis, people act like I might put a bomb in the produce or something.....every place has judgemental people. I know people who have christian families in the usa who would never allow their son to marry a muslima or their daughter to marry a muslim...but yet they couldn't tell you the first principal about Islam, and probably would never even agree to meet the person.

This is international, and has been going on since religion existed!.....

As far as Islam and Muslim nations are concerned....yes you will definately find judgemental muslims....I cannot tell you why, I am not a scholar in social science, but I know one simple thing......

The less we judge each other the faster we break the cycle...

thats it...I mean everyone has bad days but we should try.

I also believe that pre judging some one comes from fear of the unkown or mis understood most of the time.

  12. if he is really religious not just acting religious , this means that he cares about God more than caring about anyone else , so whenever he wants to do something wrong or bad he won't cz he fears God who is there all the time .

edit : wow , what's with the thumbs down loool , this place is keeping on getting worse and worse , I'm outta here

    salams

  13. im not judgmental of western people bec they have their culture that i understand and respect.

i believe that a person in Egypt and the neighboring countries is living in a place which respects religions and follows their laws .

again, im not judgmental of a person in Egypt if he isnt religious .

it is his/her personal freedom , and will answer God for his negligence of religion.

i personaly find that i can trust a person in Egypt/ the east when he follows God's laws .

this doesnt mean outer appearances , the beard , the gown, the head cover .

it means observing the 5 dictums of Islam, praying 5 times a day, fasting , giving away zakat to the needy, abstaining from drinking or eating what is prohibited , and saying the testament , i believe in God , the only God , etc.

    the same with Christians .

i can trust a true Christian who follows the laws of his religion and prays .

i believe im thinking and acting according to logic .

if a man obeys God , he/she wouldnt harm humans .

  14. (I apologize in advance for making this so long)

I do not think being religious is a "good quality".   Anyone can follow the physical necessary rituals, customs, traditions expected out of a religious person. It is the inner character and upbringing of the person that counts.  Just because you can quote out of a religious text and say the required prayers does not make the person a better person than someone who cannot or does not follow the particular method of worship.

If you are not religious - it does not make you a bad person or necessarily an ignorant one either.  I will be candid about my experience in Islamic societies.  I have noticed that a lot of people are ignorant about majority of the religions in the world other than Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.  In Islamic society the majority are indoctrinated into the faith starting from early childhood.  They predominantly see only Islam while growing up.  So they grow up thinking that their faith is the best faith and nothing else can compare or have good values and beliefs.  Anything that is an aberration from what they have been brought up to believe falls under the category of a sin.  It is constantly reinforced that their thinking is correct as most of the society and culture around them thinks the same way.  So if anything is of a different thought process "it is wrong and un-Islamic".

Everyone talks about respecting other religions, it does not work that way in Islamic society (or for that matter even in western societies - I just point out the Islamic part as that is what the question is about).  If you are not Muslim, you are already destined for h**l on judgment day.  May god guide you towards the correct path and show you that becoming Muslim is the "right way".  A little arrogant perhaps?  So basically it is saying - if you are not born or converted into the religion - you are going to burn in h**l.  It is so absolute about its convictions - ever heard the saying "It is my way or the highway"?  That is what it reminds me of.

Now don't get me wrong - I have some really great friends who are Muslim. My best friend is Muslim.  We talk about this all the time as she lives in the west and it is a constant battle within her if she does anything out of the acceptable "norm of religion".  I constantly play devils advocate for her to help her battle the perpetual guilt she feels.  I remind her of "The Parable of the Cave" by Plato.  The people inside the cave perceive reality as what they experience within the cave.  They do not even know that a whole world exists out of the cave, it is unheard & unexplored. They live in blissful oblivion and are happy with what they have.  Even when someone tells them that there is so much more outside and a whole world awaits you - they do not want to leave to explore as they think that their life is perfect the way it is and not knowing, does not make a difference.  Hence my analogy.

The free mind that you refer to is exposed and can assimilate and admit the good and bad that any religion or culture has to offer.  A lot of the west is ignorant about Islam - they only look at the bad.  They do not look at the good parts of it.  They cannot discern between religions and accept the good of what they see. They have never been educated or taught about the differences.  In a way they are the people out of the cave and have never lived in a structured religion.

If you look at any of the religions, the people who "belong" are always considered having "good quality" regardless of what they are inside.  Perception is reality for almost all of us.

This is one of my FAVORITE quotes:

“I love you when you bow in your mosque, kneel in your temple, pray in your church. For you and I are sons of one religion, and it is the spirit.”

    - Kahlil Gibran

  15. Statistically religious people have more traditional values and morals.

But religious people can be just as hypocritical and corrupt as non-religious people can be of a strong and moral character.

However, religious beliefs have always dictated a culture's moral system. Secular Turkey and United States each have based their laws on Islam-Christian, and Christian values respectively.

    So...

  16. Being "religious" implies having a good set of morals associated with that person's character. This notion holds true in other religions besides Islam..

In the West we generally don't care much about what the neighbors do.. just don't let it affect me and don't try to change or stop me. We generally get on well in society that way. (lol verrrry generally)

While I consider myself certainly a spiritual person, it is not the label and trappings of religion that one lays claim to that make them good or bad in my opinion.

So if there are certain standards and beliefs that a person holds.. in any situation of course i would expect the sincere person to really live those beliefs .. not just wear a label for it. (and these are NOT ALWAYS religious beliefs)

what I would admire is when this person truly believes and applies it practically in their life.. even when it is hard to do so. (in the sense that doing the RIGHT thing is not always the EASY thing to do). I admire the person who really cares and thinks of things higher than themselves (God, society, other people, Earth, etc) and really has that as a real living and breathing part of their character. That's a "good person"

To be honest.. if half the people in the world were as religious as they say they were h**l would surely be less populous! (again ALL religions, not just one)

btw, when I say religious I mean regular sincere belief.. not fanaticism or extremism or any such ignorance.. for me that person can live by whatever laws.. they can get an A+ for effort and for being such a dedicated jerk.. but they are not "good" for society or their community.

  17. as an Egyptian i always found religious people bad people while non religious, and atheists always good.
