  2. The word is 'Epicotyl' and NOT "eicotyl"

You have used it twice in a quick succession , that is a glaring error !

The entry in the reference is not correct or ambiguous . By their own admission it is a 'stub' and requires editing and improvement .

If the embryo in a seed is an erect axis ; then Cotyledon / s is the MID-POINT .

The part IMMEDIATELY  below them is HYPOCOTYL and above is EPICOTYL .

At one end there is Plumule ( Precurssor of shoot system ) and at the other , lowermost end the radicle ( Presurssor of root system )

The question of any one of them being absent does not arise ( As they are part of that continuous axis !!)

ONLY IN MONOCOTS THEY ( EPI - HYPOCOTYL) DO NOT LENGTHEN AS THEY DO IN DICOTS . !!!!!

They become apparent only at the time of germination and that too mostly in dicots .

Look at the diagrams below =click on the links =

In the above diagram plumule and epicotyl are not labeled that does not mean they are absent , You can understand their position .
