Question:

Eight Belles Autopsy???

I know this seems dumb, but will they do an autopsy to see what caused her to fall? Perhaps a heart attack or an annuerism? Since the circumstances around why she fell when she did. Why would they not do one if they are really concerned about the horses and their well being. I know this can be expensive but we have so much to learn about horses.

  1. Did she fall and break her fetlocks, or did she break them and then fall? I am confused.

I think that is a good idea, and maybe the owners will consider it.

  2. It is usually called Necropsy for animals. You bet they will. A freak accident like this there will be a very thorough investigation.

  3. yes they will do a very tight investigation...

  4. People just sit with their money and their stupid fluffy hats with bouncing sh*t coming out of the top and dont realize what the horses are being put through! I didnt make it to the television in time but when i found out this morning i was heartbroken. Its so sad how people put young horses in like that for MONEY. Its really depressing. I would be so mordified if my favorite horse on this planet was put into a big shindig like that and had to be put down for breaking to ankles.

    I'll pray for Eight Bells.

  5. One of the news reports I read said that they are going to do an autopsy on her.  I think for insurance, a lot of times they have to do autopsies... I know that was the case when Secretariat died... that's how they found out that he had such a big heart.  I doubt they'll find anything though... even if she had some kind of heart condition or something that made her fall, that wouldn't be the reason that she broke both of her ankles... that was just a really freakish thing that happened.  I don't think they'll ever explain how that happened.

  6. They could do one they will look over the footage again and again to see if it could have been something to how she was running or if she kinda tripped over something. If not and the owners wish they could do an autopsy. I don't think it has anything to do with her heart. She fell due to her ankles not due to her heart. I do hope they look closer at this and find out what happened. I think we would all like to know. I was betting on Big Brown to win, I was so happy when he did, but when I heard about Belles it made me very sad and all the joy of winning kinda left for me. It was such a sad thing.

  7. she broke her legs, that would pretty much cause any horse to fall.  And why do an autopsy, lots of money for no purpose, they're not going to prosecute someone for it.  If it was a heart problem, she wouldn't have been trying to get up after she went down.

  8. The autopsy will be too determine if she had anything in her blood. They will look at her heart. They will examine the two fractured ankles to see if the stress fractures caused the breaks and if there are any old fractures (healed) that might have gone unnoticed. They will do the same to the hind legs. They try to learn from there mistakes. But they are totally unwilling to make the changes that would prevent most of these injuries. She was Beautiful and she had heart.

  9. Something to think about - I read that a veterinarian commented that it was very unusual for Eight Belles to be on the ground and not moving her hind legs, which should have been happening if the horse was in pain or distress.  The veterinarian suggested that this might mean that the horse was having heart difficulties toward the final seconds of the race.  I would bet that an autopsy would be in order here.

  10. I just saw the trainer being interviewed on ESPN and he said they are doing an autopsy...and he was devastated...
