Eight brothers to feature from Perak in the Tun Abdul Razak Cup
It will be the first occasion in the history of the Tun Abdul Razak Cup hockey tournament in which eight brothers will represent Perak, one of the eight teams in the event, which is going to be played at the Bukit Serendit Hockey Stadium in Malacca from
July 23 and conclude on July 28.
The number can further be increased to ten if Tajol Rosli Mohamed, a former international player, who represents the national side, while his younger brother, Mohamed Sabri, is already a part of the team in the event, is included in the playing squad.
“If Tajol plays for us, then it will be a record of 10 brothers. It’s a rare occasion to have so many brothers playing for one team in a tournament,” Manjit Singh, the coach of Perak since 2001 in the Razak Cup, stated about the special occasion, in fact
a history making moment.
The eight brothers include two pairs, Sharul and Sharil from the Izwan family along with S Selvaraju and his brother Bubalan, whereas Roslan, the goal-keeper will join up with his brothers, Izzat, Azlan Misron and Azli.
He also looked very pleased over the participation of S. Selvaraju, a former international player, in this year’s tournament.
“He did not play for us last year. Selvaraju is an experienced player. He can play in midfield as well as attack,” Manjit Singh stated about the veteran player who can render his services in the midfield as well as in the forward line.
“We have a well balanced team with experience and youthful exuberance. We have also included five players from the Project 2013 squad and they are now on a playing tour of Europe. I believe we can end our 19-year title drought with this team,” Manjit Singh
further stated about his team’s chances in the event.
Manjit Singh has the confidence that his team will make through to the final of the event like last year, in Kuantan, where they lost to 18-time Champions, Kuala Lumpur, by 0-1.
Perak has been placed in the Group B along with Malacca, Terengganu and Pahang, while Group A consists of Johor, Penang, Armed Forces and the 18-time winners, Kuala Lumpur.
