Eight players will contest first ever Power Snooker event
Eight players will contest the first ever Power Snooker event on the 30 October in London.
Ronnie O’Sullivan who was the first to be confirmed will be joined by Jimmy White, World Champion Neil Robertson and Ali Carter.
Ding Junhui, Mark Selby, young Belgian Luca Brecel and Shaun Murphy will complete the line-up.
The eight players will compete for points and not for frames in an attempt to make the game more attacking. The games will be played in 30 minutes and women will referee the matches. Music will be played in the background to create a livelier atmosphere.
The Power Snooker organisers have said that the players will be hooked up to microphones and that unlike traditional snooker the crowd will be encouraged to participate.
The first Power Snooker tournament will take place at the Indigo O2 in London and the organisers believe that this will be the future of snooker. The game has seen a decline in sponsorship and popularity since the 1980s.
The tournament will be played in two sessions on one day. All of the players will be involved in the first knock out round in the afternoon. The evening session will include the four winners who will battle it out for a place in the final.
Former world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan said, "This is the future and a few people have got to get their heads around it. It is going to change snooker. The crowd will love it and the public will enjoy it. I cannot find a flaw in it.
"Snooker needs a new audience. A game ending in 30 minutes is exciting," O’Sullivan added.
The promoters will hope that the revolutionary idea will draw a young crowd to the game in the hope that the sport can build a new fan base.
