Eighth seed Yaroslava Shvedova ousts Ji Hee Choi in qualifying 1st round – Hansol Korea Open 2011
Number eighth seeded Yaroslava Shvedova ousted wildcard entrant Ji Hee Choi in the qualifying first round of the Hansol Korea Open on outdoor hard courts of the Olympic Tennis Courts in Seoul, South Korea on the 17th of September
2011. After 43 minutes of play Shvedova won in straight sets with a double bagel victory (6-0, 6-0).
After winning the toss Choi was first to serve, but was unable to hold her serve and it became a bad start for the Korean (Choi). In the second game Shvedova served with confidence and held her serve to take a 2-0 lead.
She again broke her opponent by cracking the cross-court forehand and then following it up with a massive off forehand winner in the third game and in the fourth won on her own serve.
The Korean had apparently forgotten her way as she was broken for the third time in the set and the score was 5-0 in the fifth game. As Shvedova served for the set, she stroked a stunning crosscourt forehand and won the match point
to seal a faultless victory of the opening set.
Shvedova was the dominating player as she did not set up a single break point opportunity for her adversary, instead availed all her break points to round off a bagel set victory in the initial set with almost thrice as many points
as the Korean’s.
Opening the second set was, Shvedova as she had powered through to the first set, she set the tone for the second.
Kazakh Shvedova initiated the set with a resoluteness to win the second set and she held her serve in the first game. She went on to eventually breaking Choi first in the second game to take a mini lead of 2-0.
She again won on her respective serve in the third game and in the fourth broke her opponent by rushing forward towards the net to produce a stirring stretched volley.
The score was 5-0 for the Kazakh as she held her serve in the fifth game and was looking to break her opponent for the third and last time. In the next game as Choi served to stay in the match Shvedova broke her and conquered a
faultless victory of the second set.
The Kazakh, seeded at number eight, was clearly the better player and with almost five times the score she sealed a comprehensive victory and secured a berth in the next round.
