Eirini Georgatou undoes Ellen Allgurin in the second qualifier round – eBoks Sony Ericsson Open 2011
Greek tennis player Eirini Georgatou undid Ellen Allgurin of Sweden in the second round of qualifier at the 2011 e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open, defeating her in straight sets to reach the final round of the qualifying draw. The Greek
pro managed to defeat her opponent in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(6), taking just a little over one hour and thirty six minutes to pull off an impressive win.
Although the match was not exactly an easy one for the Greek player, she did not have much trouble deflating Allgurin in the first set. Despite the fact that Allgurin scored more aces and committed less unforced errors, Georgatou
managed to take the lead with utmost ease. She broke Allgurin twice in the first set alone, and was broken just once herself. Allgurin ended the first set by taking four points more than Allgurin, leading her to take 53 percent of the total points played in
the set. Georgatou won the first set 6-4.
The second set was a more competitive one, as Allgurin seemed to realize that her chance in the final round was at stake. The Swedish pro played ruthlessly in this part of the match, committing just two double faults and breaking
Georgatou once. Along with this, she was herself broken thrice by Georgatou out of four opportunities. The second set lasted for six service and return games apiece, after which Allgurin delayed Georgatou’s straight-sets victory by some minutes. The set was
pushed into a tie-breaker, and it seemed as if the two women would be playing three sets. However, Georgatou pushed on to win two points more than her opponent in the second set again, winning the match with a score-line of 6-4, 7-6(8).
The 21-year-old Georgatou concluded her straight sets victory by virtue of 57 percent of points on service, 51 percent of points on return and 54 percent of points in total. Furthermore, she scored six aces and seven double-faults
en route to 6-4, 7-6(8) victory. In contrast, Allgurin finished off the match with seven aces and two double-faults. She also obtained 49 percent of points on her service, 43 percent of points on return and a meagre 46 percent in total.
Both players had never competed against each other before, and their head-to-head series now stands at 1-0 for Georgatou. Furthermore, the Greek pro has also extended her year-to date win loss mark to 10/11 matches and now moves
on ahead to face Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan in the final round of qualifier on Monday.
