Ekaterina Makarova plonks Elena Vesnina to reach round three – US Open 2012
In an all-Russian encounter, the 93rd ranked Elena Vesnina was dumped by the 42nd ranked Ekaterina Makarova, who comfortably booked the third round berth at the US Open with straight sets win 6-3, 6-4.
It was a one-sided battle and the doubles specialist Vesnina never had that charming shot making ability to trouble the likes of the 24-year-old Makarova. She has now lost three times to her compatriot and managed just a single
win that came way back in 2004 during the second round of Balashikha. So technically, Vesnina is yet to make a move against one of her friend who has been brutal to her in all their head-to-head encounters.
Makarova commenced the match with a serve hold and the 26-year-old Vesnina followed her. However, when the younger Russian held her serve for the second time, she made sure that her opponent was not allowed an easy route and squeezed
a breakthrough and posted a lead of 3-1. It was a good start for the 42nd ranked Russian who was expected to reign supreme over her rival and she did in style.
No breakthroughs for the 26-year-old Russian witnessed her going down a trail of one set after the end of the ninth game. She had her opponent in a spot of bother on two different occurrences but couldn’t make use of those opportunities
to diminish the trial and equalize the scores. Other than that, it was a solid performance from the talented Makarova who was proud of her performance on the eve of Thursday.
Vesnina started the second set with a serve hold and so did her rival. Both players swapped breakpoints and didn’t falter on their serves until the scores moved on to 4-4. Another mistake from Vesnina cost her second breakpoint
of the set and that proved pivotal as her compatriot won all four points on her final serve game to comfortably reach the third round of the contest.
Ekaterina Makarova is scheduled to take on the likes of the former world number one, Serena Williams, in the third round of the event. Williams is the hot favourite to win the US Open title.
