Ekaterina Makarova tumbles over Galina Voskoboeva in round one – Mutua Madrid Open 2012
Russian starlet, Ekaterina Makarova, dumps the Kazakhstani contestant, Galina Voskoboeva, in straight sets at the Mutua Madrid Open 2012 on Monday. She penned down a 6-2, 7-6(3) score line against the Russian-born Voskoboeva to secure a spot in the round
of 32 at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) clay court event taking place in Madrid, Spain.
Makarova unleashed her true colours at the Park Manzanares and trashed the world number 42 in one hour and 27 minutes. Meeting each other for the fifth time, the Russian not only avenged her loss at the Seoul WTA event last circuit but also took lead in
the head-to-head series by 3-2 against Voskoboeva.
The left-handed Russian made a strong start at this WTA Premier Mandatory event and drew the first blood in the third game to take a 3-1 lead. After the Kazakh held her serve in the fifth game, Makarova re-kindled his spark again and stroke out the last
three games, sealing the set by winning six games to two.
Ranked 41st in the WTA Premier Rankings, Makarova lost her direction towards the second set and suffered the first blow in the third game. However, she quickly recovered in the very next game and dragged the set to the tie-breaker. The Russian
outshined her opponent completely in it and clinched the set with a 7-6(3) score line.
All in all, Makarova manipulated a better first serve share of 67 per cent as compared to her rival’s 52 per cent and brilliantly availed 30 out of 38 points on it. She also capitalised on three out of eight break chances and finished the match with 72 points.
Makarova will square off against her 16th seeded compatriot, Maria Kirilenko, who trashed China’s Jie Zheng in straight sets to set-up this duel.
The former world number one, Serena Williams, will accompany Makarova in the second round. The American number one cripples Elena Vesnina of Russia with a breadstick to advance. She fired 14 aces and broke her rival’s serve four times to formulate a 6-3,
6-1 victory in 69 minutes.
Williams will face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the round of 32.
