This question is for a Literacy course I am taking for my Elementary Education degree. I am required to interview an El. Ed. teacher to find out how they assess their student's literacy skills. I am looking for answers from any 1st, 2nd or 3rd grade teachers. Please be specific!! Thank you so much!

  1. You need elementary Ed teachers? Well here's what we do at my school for K-1 and 2nd-3rd

At the beginning of the year we have a phonics screening, sight words assessment, sound/letter assessment, and a reading fluency passage. These are repeated at the end of each trimester. 2nd and 3rd grade do the same except they usually eliminate the sound/letter assessment as soon as students master it (hopefully K-1)

Fluency is leveled passages that student read for 1 minute. We use the same ones each time to show growth. We use the end-of-the-year fluency passage all year, because this is the mark they need to attain.

Each trimester the # of correct words per minute increases.

Sight words are assessed by LA theme with 175 required at the end of 1st.

2nd grade uses sight word phrases with students needing to read 200 by years end. i.e "where are they" "in the way" "above and below"  etc

Phonics screening and phonemic awareness assessments are given each year to see if any gaps in learning exsist and then teachers can give systematic, phonics instructions to those students. Screening includes inital, medial and final sounds in a word. Substitution of sounds and word segmentation.

Comprehension is tested by theme and by teacher observations and questions in class.

    That's it in a nutshell.
