Elaine Breeden, Elizabeth Pelton dominate women’s events – 2011

Unattached-PC’s Elaine Breeden and North Baltimore’s Elizabeth Pelton excelled in the women’s events on day four of the 2011 North Carolina Charlotte UltraSwim.
The Charlotte UltraSwim is the second last stop of the seven stops of the 2010-11 USA Swimming Grand Prix Series that concluded on Sunday, May 15, 2011.
The session included the preliminary rounds of the 200m Individual Medley (IM), 200m backstroke, 100m freestyle and the 800m freestyle in the women’s category.
The day began with the Women’s 200m IM, where the 22-year-old Elaine Breeden dominated the qualifying rounds with a wonderful timing of 2:16.60 minutes. Breeden, who qualified as the fastest swimmer into the final, was only 0.15 seconds away from her following
swimmer, Katinka Hosszu, who touched the wall for second fastest qualification in 2:16.75 minutes. Una TROJ-CA’s Stina Gardell followed them into the final as the third fastest swimmer, clocking a time of 2:17.42 minutes.
The next event was the qualifying rounds of the 200m backstroke, where the North Baltimore’s 17-year-old Elizabeth Pelton demonstrated her impressive swimming skills by touching the wall first in a time of 2:12.96 minutes. Pelton was almost a second ahead
of the Nittany Lion-MA’s Amy Modglin, who became apparent as the second fastest swimmer with a timing of 2:13.78 minutes. Moments later, Colorado Stars-C’s Missy Franklin occupied the third fastest qualification spot, touching home in 2:14.76 minutes.
After a few minutes, California-PC’s Dana Vollmer claimed the fastest qualification spot in the 100m freestyle final. The 23-year-old Vollmer was 0.66 seconds away from the Swim Atlanta-GA’s Amanda Weir, who secured second fastest finish by touching the
wall in a time of 55.52 seconds. Kara Lynn Joyce of the Colorado Stars-C overwhelmed her following swimmers to qualify as the third fastest swimmer in 55.54 seconds.
The last event of the session was 800m freestyle, where the Mission Viejo-CA’s Chloe Sutton dwelled as the fastest swimmer into the final, posting a time of 8:24.51 minutes. She was followed by Andreina Pinto of the Gator Swim Club and Camryne Morris of
North Baltimore, who transpired as the second and third fastest swimmers with impressive times of 8:37.44 and 8:38.78 minutes respectively. The fourth fastest spot was secured by Minnesota-MN’s Ashley Steenvoorden, who posted a time of 8:41.70 minutes.
These female swimmers will once again compete with each other in the finals of their respective events, where the winners of each event will be awarded accolades for their spectacular swims.
The last stop of the 2010-11 USA Grand Prix Series will be in Santa Clara in June 2011, where the swimming elites will battle each other for the titles of their events.
