I need some help here. I got a Hyundai Elantra 2008 GLS. I bought a 15" rims 5 months ago, but Im considering on getting a 17" rims. Do you think this is a good idea? I really just want to do this to make the car fancier, anything else. Is this going to make me waste more gasoline? Is this going to harm my car in some way?. Regards...

  1. 17's would be fine, so long as you get the correct profile tire to match the current tire height.  You can ask the guys at your local tire shop or a chain like Pepboys, Just Tires or go to http://www.tirerack.com  Your mpg's shouldn't be affected by the change.  The only harm will be that the lower profile tires will cause you to have a rougher ride and the tires will be more expensive to replace because they are larger, your car should handle better though.

  2. You can't polish a t**d.  It's an Elantra.  New wheels aren't going to make it fancier.

With that said, you won't see any noticable difference in gas mileage with bigger wheels.  Your speedometer may need to be recalibrated, though.  To avoid that, get a tire with a lower profile.  Rule of thumb:  For every 2 inches in diameter you gain in the wheel, get a tire with a 25mm decrease in profile.  Then your speedometer should be fine.

  3. It will not harm the car, gas will be almost the same. It might make gas worse by 0.5mpg.

tirerack.com shows you how the wheels look on your car.

You can choose 17 and 18 inch to see and change the color of your car.

Just do not get chrome wheels.
