My boyfriend has been on Elavil for about a month. It makes it exhuasted where he sleeps until 11 every morning. He has been very mean and grumpy and latharghic. Its really starting to worry his mother and I. He only gets better when he takes a clonopin and knows hes been a monster since put on the Elavil. Zoflot and Celexia didn't work for him but didn't have this bad of a side effect.

Is this a normal side effect of Elavil? Its really hard to see him acting like this becuase normally he is such a laid back and loving person.

Thanks so much.

  1. I would just like to say that he should not be suffering.  I was put on 3 different anti-depressants last year that turned me into someone I didn't even know.  I either slept 16 hours a day, was crying or couldn't sleep at all, and the paranoia I sometimes felt was exhausting, depending on which drug I was taking.  Finally, I withdrew myself, cautiously, off the medicine.  My doctor was mad, but he eventually referred me to someone else who recognized the problem and really helped me.   Tell him to find another doctor.

  2. It sounds like there has been enough time for the elavil to work at it's maximum effectiveness. perhaps the dosage is too much. for an in-depth look at the side effects, you can go to drugs.com and look up Elavil.

I was on 40 mg of Celexa, which was helping, but with strong side effects. since it was not taking care of the issue, it was lowered to 30mg and I was then put on wellbutrin with it.  It took like two weeks, and I was back to normal.

There are a few different types of anti-depressants, some work together and some can only be tried once your system is clear of the others. If he is willing, then through trial and error, a good mix can be found. But just for the rest of his life, I think that working on coping skills would help him. Good luck!!!
