Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim breaks digital distributor Steam’s sales record
Bethesda’s title sets a new record for fastest selling game on Valve’s digital distribution platform. It seems everything is better with dragons
Selling more copies than any other PC title on offer in the previous month, the fifth instalment in the Elder Scrolls series, Skyrim, has now raised the bar in terms of sales for PC games.
Valve have confirmed earlier on that not only was Skyrim selling in the millions across all platforms, but that the digital version of the game which is available for purchase and download on Steam has sold more than any other game in the same time period.
According to the Director of Business Development, or DBD, at Valve, Jason Holtman, the developers behind Skyrim are to be commended for finding the right mix for satisfying the PC gaming demographic with their game. He also complimented them on managing
such a successful launch of the game and managing to draw in a large number of consumers who are playing the game on a regular basis.
However, having said that, it would be better to hear it from the horse’s mouth, or rather the DBD’s mouth. He said, “Skyrim is the fastest selling title in Steam’s history. Bethesda’s commitment to and understanding of the PC as a gaming platform shows
in the great review scores, spectacular launch and continued high player numbers that Skyrim has received.”
While it is still early days, the game has already jumped to the top of almost everyone’s lists for the Game of the Year award. The PlayStation 3 version of the game may be full of glitches with dragon skeletons taking flight and horses seeming able to fly,
yet the PC version has had fewer problems and is an overall smoother and less frustrating experience.
According to the figures released by Valve, the fifth instalment in the Elder Scrolls series sold at a ratio of three to one as compared to the other games on offer. That may not seem like much but if one was to take a look at the games Skyrim is going up
against, it becomes all the more impressive an accomplishment.
In fact, Skyrim has already become a part of popular culture in the world today with a number of YouTube videos popping up with the game’s Dragon Shouts dubbed into the clips.
The previous instalment of the game, the Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, was also rated highly and praised by review sites and critics, yet it did not match the financial success that its successor has managed to achieve in the span of just a few weeks.
Whether or not Skyrim will go on to become the best selling PC game of all time is anyone’s guess though if it continues at this pace, that might just happen and soon.
