My 80 year old neighbor had her air conditioner unit go out recently. She is on a fixed income, and can't afford to buy a new one. Does anyone know of any organizations for the elderly that could assist her finacially?

  1. Hey Stephanie,

I imagine that you could help them find a pretty reasonably priced air conditioner at a garage sale.  I once sold a used air conditioner for $25.  You are a good person for helping them!

  2. Contact Sheila Jackson Lee's office and see if the Houston Project Heat Relief is still ongoing and if your neighbor qualifies.

  3. Go to the Goodwill, or Salvation Army, they may have an air conditioner, they can give her.  If there is a male neighbor, maybe he can fix it, if it needs work.

  4. i've only heard of organizations giving out fans.  you could look/ask on craigslist.org for her.

  5. I don't know where you live, so I don't know any organizations in your area, air conditioners don't really cost that much, why doesn't the neighborhood get together and each pitch in a little money and buy her a new a/c. That would be a neighborly thing to do and probably much appreciated.

  6. I recommend you contact United Way and see if they know of any senior citizen groups that help with fans or A/C. Also check with your local Fire Department. Here in San Antonio,we have a program that gives away fans to senior citizens for free.

  7. Your in Texas? I would check with the local "township assistance" office and your local "community action" agency. Often they have senior funds to help with this stuff.

Worse case scenario, call your local public aid office, tell them what is going on, they will know who can help.

    Last resort, try churches.
