My great aunt is 87 and wants to join her sister who lives in Canada. I heard she might only be able to get a 6 month visa? meaning she would have to leave the country for a while then return for another 6 months.

Does anyone know how she can find out what her options are?

Thanks, as usual :)

  1. TUPPENYSCUM !!!!!!!!!!! What a disgustingly insensitive answer !

You should be ashamed of yourself you sad loser !

Your Great Aunt may be 87 but she is family and as such she will be no different to a younger member ! So go ahead and get her to apply and take no notice of the above idiots answer !

    Good luck

  2. at her age it is very unlikely she would pass the immigration process

  3. Anyone can apply and become a permanent resident, and even become a Canadian citizen. A 106 year old American man just became the oldest person to apply and be granted Canadian citizenship just a week or two ago.

You are right about the 6-month visa. Usually, someone coming to "visit" is not provided a visa that lasts longer than six months. She would then have to leave, get a new visa, and come back for another six months. But that is for a temporary residence visa (also known as a tourist visa)

Your great aunt can apply for permanent residence instead of temporary residence. And she does not need to become a Canadian citizen unless she wants to later. Her sister (your mom?) can sponsor her as a family member.
