Elections for the National Olympic Committee of Pakistan to be held soon
Lt Gen (retd) Syed Arif Hasan, who is the president of the Pakistan Olympic Association announced recently that the elections for the National Olympic Committee would be held shortly.
Having said that, Arif also asserted that according to the guidelines of the International Olympic Committee, the elections for the members of the NOC will be conducted in a democratic manner.
Having talked about the elections for the NOC, Arif also stated the services that the POA provides to the budding athletes of the country and what other services the POA has planned to develop sports in Pakistan. However, Arif also conceded that the development
of sports in Pakistan is severely hindered by a lack of funds in the country.
Arif explained himself on the issue in the following manner, “We will be upgrading POA website in a way to make it attractive for sponsors and we are in the process of evolving a system to lure sponsors to cater the ever growing needs of funding the POA
and national sports federations’ activities.”
Arif also stated that the POA is looking to enhance other sports and increase the number of sporting tournament in the country. Among the future games and tournaments that the POA has planned for the athletes in Pakistan, more focus is being laid on the
beach sports and women sports. The names of some of the upcoming and planned tournaments are National Beach Games, National Women’s Games and National Youth Games.
Arif explained all this in the following words, “Through these championships we will make gradual progress and with the assistance of the Government we will be able to bid for the Asian Beach Games and Youth Indoor Games in near future.”
Having talked about the NOC, Arif also mentioned that he was willing to contest for the elections in the NOC and that he had unanimous support from the executive members of the POA committee.
The NOC is being formed for the London 2012 Olympic Games that are scheduled to be held in the capital of England for the third time in its history. No other city of the world has yet had the honour of hosting the Olympics for a total of three times.
