Question:

Electress Sophia of Hanover?

When the Electress Sophia of Hanover was designated heir to the British throne in 1701 she was already 71 years old. Had she ever been to England? Did she speak English?

Same two questions about her son George I. Did he visit England at all before he took the throne? Was he fluent in English by his death?

  1. Are you trying  to rewrite History or are you just  another one who cannot accept the way things are.Get real !!!!!!

  2. The Electress Sophia's mother was British as her grandfather was James I, therefore it is extremely likely that she spoke English.

George I supposedly spoke no English when he ascended the throne, however, this is nowadys thought to be false although it is indisputable that German was his first langauge and he spoke English with a German accent. However, it is generally acknowledged that he could speak, read and write English by the time of his death and was to all intents and purposes fluent.

It is not recorded whether the Electress Sophia or George I (before he inherited the throne) ever visited England before he ascended the throne although George I was already in contact with English politicians and had appointed Baron Parker, the Lord Chief Justice to act as Regent upon Queen Anne's death until he arrived in England.

  3. No to the first two questions, don't know on the third, certainly at his death he still sounded like Arnie Schwarzenegger according to contemporary sources.

Would have been much better for the british Crown if Sophia had succeeded.
