  1. Hi There

Watch it. This is a simple cold solder or a broker wire. You shouln't pay more than $10 to get it done correctly. Pickups don't burn and don't let the person con you either. I suspect the input where you put your jack is where the problem is.

Sometimes, the nut gets lose and the input gets shorted . No mystery here and not a complicated job.

  2. Did the person who told you it was the wiring know for a fact that it WAS the wiring? Before you go any further, either ask someone (a friend) who knows all of the things to test (wiring is just one of them) or take it to a guitar shop and ask for an estimate. There is no way to tell you how much this could cost because it is not clear just what the problem is.

You can look at pricing on replacement pickups here:

  3. From what you're describing, the problem is likely just a bad solder somewhere in the wiring. If that's the case, I'd say $20 max. Anybody who charges more to fix one bad solder point is ripping you off. It's not microsurgery. Theoretically it COULD be a bad jack or pot, but it's not likely, and those aren't particularly pricey either.

I don't know exactly what pickups Fender is using in the various Squier II models right now, but you can get all sorts of replacements for them if that interests you. The Irongear company makes a very nice set of replacements for about $35 apiece (current currency conversion rate),
