Question:

Electric Questions - Junction box or extension or multi cavity box?

I have one supply line (15 Amp) going into a new small bathroom. I want to connect the supply to a GFI; run extension from GFI to a switch 1 (for a light); and run extension from switch 1 to switch 2 ( for a light/fan).

- Is extension possible from switch?

- Is more than one extension possible from a GFI?

- Or should I make multi connections from supply line to GFI and 2 switches inside a 3-unit box (blue plastic)?

- Or Is junction box only option?

- Should I raise 15A circuit breaker to 20A?

Thanks.

  1. your problem is not as big as you think. However you need  a 20 amp circut feeding that GFI. also you need a 15 amp circut feeding the other light & fan light combo, you do not need to stop at the gfi for the light run at all. run your power to the box and make pig tails for you switches.     good luck

  2. I recently remodeled my bathroom and had a very similar situation to what you have described here. The difference being that I had an additional light & GFI outlet in mine.

As far as the amperage I would say 15A is enough.mine is 20 but thats just bc that is what it was when I started. If you find that the breaker trips alot then change it.

So here is what I did.You sound as if you know what you're doing so I'm not go to go into great detail.

Use your switch box as the junction point.Run your power feed into it and just wire everything from there. And you can just jumper one switch to the other.

  3. run the feed to the switch box, and splice everything from there. pigtail to the switch(es), and also hit the first (g.f.c.i.) receptacle from there. all other receptacles after that will also be protected. you really don't have the option of changing to a larger breaker unless the wire is big enough to handle the amperage-20 amp requires #12 wire- is that what is existing?

unless it is REALLY old wiring, you can find the wire size on the outer jacket (insulation) of the cable, example 12/2,14/3

it is not really a good idea to put lights, fans, and switches behind (downstream) of a g.f.i. because of nuisance trips.

splice in the back of the receptacle box if you have to, to keep the switches out of the g.f.c.i. portion of the circuit.

  4. You can accomplish this by installing a Kanooter Splitter directly at the switch.
