Electric Wall Heater Sparking

Question

I have an electric wall heater in my condo that's worked fine for years. But the first time I turned the thermostat on this Winter, a bunch of blue sparks lit up in the heater itself. Of course I turned it off. I tried it a second time and it happened again. Any ideas what could be causing this?
