I've been playing for awhile now and I've been wanting an electric cello. I already have an acoustic cello and I'm in a band that could use some electric cello! I've heard you can get a pickup to make a normal cello plug into an amp, but can you add effects that way? And how do you add effects to begin with? help!

  1. Sorry I don't play cello but I play violin, i have an acoustic violin and electric. Just to tell you, an electric stringed instrument sounds very different to the acoustic one.  if you want to made cool affects on an ordinary cello, try vibrato  and stickato thay can make some cool sound affects. if it still doesnt help I would suggest buying a book on sound affects for strings.

    Hope this helps...

    violin player!

  2. I've played both and I prefer my acoustic cello amped. Electric cellos lose the warmth that makes a cello so fabulous.

Go to a music store and they should have a pickup for you, you need to attach it to an effects peddle to get the sounds you want, but lots of guitarists have them and you can probably find one for not too much online or at a music store.

  3. I have a pickup on my acoustic. You can just plug it into an fx pedal or into an amp. It's great and doesn't have that awful reedy sound electrics have. I have a fishman (sp?) which is pretty standard as far as cello pickups go. The mount goes under the tailpiece and I just put it on when I play gigs and then take it off when I practice Bach! Pretty sweet. You['ll need your own 1/4 inch though. Always come prepared with your own supplies. I even have a tiny amp I bring around with me jic.

    Good luck.
