  1. Ok first of all those guitars aren't "c**p". In fact I rented one for my first guitar. But before you buy it go to a guitar store near you that sells Squiers and see if YOU like it. Amp wise I might go with a Line 6 Spider III  15. It's a 99.99 dollar (U.S.) amp with some cool effects. So it's just in your price range!

    Good Luck!

BTW banjoman Squier is made by Fender neither Gibson nor Epiphone.

I'd say for a beginner guitar that's in that price range that's about as good as you get. Some guitars are the same price but not as good as Squier/Fender!

    Again Good Luck!

  2. The Squiers are not bad beginner guitars.  They are made by Gibson, whose "cheaper brand" is Epiphone, whose cheaper brand is Squier.

If you are not going to be performing and just need an amp for practice, I suggest the Pignose amp.  It's small, battery powered and you can take it any where.

You will also need a cable.  Don't let GuitarCenter sell you Monster cables.  These are way overkill for what you need and very expensive to boot.

Please note that GuitarCenter has always had a tendency to try to sell me a lot more than I need.  Decide what you want and stick to it.  Don't let them talk you out of what you want for something more expensive.

As an alternative, try Elderly Instruments www.elderly.com.  I've always had good luck with them.
