  1. It all depends on which one you are interested in.

  2. Electric guitar or electric bass, or electric bass or acoustic bass?

i stick with the first one.

    GUITAR-

    PROS-

    Easy to strum

    get a lot of attention

    CONS-

    WAY TOO MANY GUITARISTS!!!

    over exaggerated

    Bass-

    pros-

    4-13 strings

    many different ways to play

harder to play than guitar (pro and con)

    Con-

    under exagerrated

put downs by losers who think it takes nothing to play

    Stick with bass. And remember-

BASS IS HARDER THAN THE GUITAR UNLESS YOU THINK DONT BELEIVE YOU CAN PLAY!!!

  3. bass is mostly scales, if you learn guitar first you can pick up bass on your own

  4. Put on some good headphones, or find a stereo system with a decent subwoofer, and then crank up the bass.

Listen to a bunch of songs you like.  Take note of the bass lines - this is what bass players play.

I assume you're familiar with various lead and rhythm styles of guitar - but if not, listen to a bunch of your favorite songs and pay attention to the guitars.

Now pick one. :)  It's really as simple as that.

I'll second the earlier note that it's easy to start playing bass once you know guitar.

As much as bass players hate to admit it (and I hope this doesn't start a flame war), but becoming a proficient bass player takes far less time than to become a proficient guitar player.

Music theory is music theory, regardless of any instrument - so becoming a good *musician* would take as long with either instrument.  So note i'm only talking about becoming a proficient player.

As a result, it'll be easier to find and join a band much sooner as a bass player - if this is something you want to do.

The guitar, on the other hand, has a significantly wider range of options in terms of what you can make the instrument do.  As a result, it takes a lot longer to master this greater number of skills.

But difficulty aside - the real determining factor should be which instrument you like better, and which you'd rather play.
