  1. They are not illegal, as long as they are wearing a helmet it's all good.

  2. I don't think they are illegal for kids, but you do have to have certain things (number plate like a car, for example) to be able to use them on the streets. I don't think they are allowed in parks or anything either. So I don't think they are illegal, but they can only really be used on private property.

Edit: Depending on whether you are in the UK or US might make a big difference. But at such slow speeds on the roads these would be considered dangerous, especially if kids are riding them that have no idea about road safety and rules of the road so I can't imagine it is completely legal, but there's just no rule against the age for buying them

  3. An electric scooter (a 'toy') is not illegal for kids to ride, but it is illegal to ride them on pavements or on the road. According to the law they should be used on private land, but if you live in a cul-de-sac or something then you could use it there.

However, a petrol powered 50cc scooter is illegal for anyone under 16  and without a provisional licence.

  4. Any powered vehicle used in a public place is subject to the law.

Which basically means that you pays your money and takes your choice. So, they are not illegal as such. But the use of them on the road for example would constitute an offence if they were not an approved design, taxed, insured, mot'd and ridden by a person without a valid licence. No problem on private land of course.

  5. Yes they almost certainly are illegal on public roads. While electrically assisted bicycles are fine, not even needing tax and insurance, kids powered  scooters fall foul of the construction regulations, with regard to seats and brakes in particular. In somewhere liks a park they may be ok if the park management permits them. They may not. My nephew had one and was pulled by the Police on the pavement. He then asked if he could use it in the local park. The park warden said ok, but then checked with the council and had to say NO

  6. Electric scooters are not illegal.

  7. Ron is correct, but he is referring to mobility scooters for disabled people.

Toy electric scooters for kids are a different thing altogether and are illegal to use in a public place in the UK.

    "Penalties

The law states that the rider must be aged 16 or over and they must hold a relevant driving licence. If they hold a provisional licence L-plates must be displayed and they must have taken their Compulsory Basic Training. Riders must also wear crash helmets and the vehicle must be insured, taxed, hold a MOT certificate and display a number plate.

People found riding a scooter without any valid insurance are liable to receive a 6-point penalty along with a typical fine of £600."

  8. yes, they are illegal on roads because they do not have the required safety devices such as headlights, brakes, tail lights, turn signals

  9. What are "kides"?

Electric scooters are considered bicycles where I live and they are allowed on bicycle trails and roads with bicycle lanes.

  10. By co-incidence I work for a company that sells them, there are basically two types, one that's restricted to 4mph for pavement and shop use, and the other is restricted to 8mph which is the maximum allowed in the UK.

The second can be used on the pavement or the road and is perfectly legal for people of all ages.

EDIT: Barry, in the answer above yours, I've said that I sell them every day, I will sell about another four tomorrow.you don't need a licence, you don't have to pass a test, you don't have to pay road tax, just inform DVLA that you have one, you don't need an MOT, so they are not illegal as obviously the above criteria are not relevant, and equally obvious their design has been approved for years.

Obviously as a responsible parent, it would be your job to look after them.

EDIT 2: ME you are quite correct, I am refering to mobility scooters, I didn't know there was another sort so I bow to your superior knowledge on the subject, I don't think the questioner made this point clear, perhaps Lauren can do this for us!

  11. no. kids are on them all the time where i live. and there are alot of cops that drive around and nothing happens. they arent illegal at all. ((then also they let kids buy them so no they arent illegal))

  12. are  you, disabled in anyway or form,

because that is what  they are  used  for , not  for  fun,

just remember that, next time you , see an  elderly or disabled

    person.

they need alot  of help,  more  than you do .

  13. I dont know, are they?

    I don't think they are!

  14. are bicycles illegal for kids??

i think you can work out the answer for this one yourself

    >>edit>> Joe B you have it wrong! there is no bloddy law againts a little kid riding a little electric scooter, they only go 8mph miles >TOPS< they are for like ages up to 10ys old. Its definately not illegal for a child to ride it in his quiet street. Its a little electric toy not a speed worthy machine like i said 8mph tops

NOT EVERYTHING WITH TWO WHEELS AND A MOTOR WITHOUTS LIGHTS AND BLINKERS IS ILLEGAL

  15. found this on internet

All our electric bicycles comply with these rules and with the new EN 15194 standard that will come into force across the European Union shortly. You will not need to register your bicycle, hold a licence, take out compulsory insurance or pay road tax. However, you must be aged 14 years or over.
