I'm not very familiar with ovens so I'll try to explain what happened in detail.
My mom was cooking on the stove-top (Westinghouse with coils and tin foil underneath to catch drippings). It's pretty old and it's never had a problem before. Anyway, she also puts up this little fold-out piece of foil to keep back spray that sits on the top around the coil.
About in the middle of cooking when it'd been on for a while, suddenly there's this LOUD buzzing sound and it starts spitting out white sparks from the coil. It did this twice and settled down, then we turned it off.
It looks pretty normal now, but we're not using it again until we figure out what went wrong. Was it the foil? A short-circuit? Does it need to be replaced?
