Electrical Problem - exposed live wire inside the circuit box!?

This is what my home inspection says about this problem

"Wiring to dryer 240 V circuit has been reconfigured in a sub-standard manner. The 240 V circuit has been split but one live wire remains in panel improperly terminated. Wire to second leg of 240 V dryer circuit is undersized."

Anyone know how much this will cost? I'm assuming I'll need a certified electrician.

  1. $275

  2. It should be a minimum time charge for a service call. Maybe 2-4 hours.  The cost depends on the labor rate in your area.

  3. you could do it yourself.  Shut the main power off.  buy a piece of the right size wire, hook it up to the circuit box the proper way.  The kicker about the whole thing is running the proper wire to where the dryer is now.  It will cost several hundred $ +.

  4. I would only attempt it if you are comfortable around electricity. As to how much it cost would only depend on how far it is between the dryer and the electrical panel. Also if you are on a slab or foundation. Chances are if it is a short run and you have a foundation you are not looking at much money.

  5. Scope of Work

    1. Demo time = $70

    2. Run new wire = $130 (wire lenght not to exceed 50' of         #10   THHN).

    3. Connections at panel and dryer = $40 (material and labor)

    4. Tax on material 7.5%

    5. Markup cost 25%

Total I would estimate about $315
