Is there any problem in covering an unused electrical outlet with a solid outlet plate (i.e. a covering without holes for the sockets). Thank you

  1. No problem at all.

If it still has the receptacle you can ask for a cover plate with a slight depth to it so it will fit flush over your duplex receptacle or quadruplex or what ever might be the case.

  2. Note to woodwerk, I wouldn't use the word "connect" with wirenuts, instead, "cap off" may be more appropriate.

Back to the Q, you'll have to remove the recep. if its still there, cap the wires, install blank plate. If there are two wires on each side, its an illegal  installation, can't feed through the tabs, just connect (yeah I know I said "connect)" the two blacks together, and then the two whites together, and if the grounds weren't pigtailed, also illegal, connect them together, and make sure they're attached to the box (important).

But, most important, make sure the power is off, plug a lamp in to verify.

  3. No, as long as the cover plate can be mounted, but of course there is always glue, caulking, etc which can be used to cover it.

  4. none whatsoever. you are converting an outlet into an accessible junction box, which is what is required. as long as you have connected  the circuit leads with wirenuts.

    Hope tht helps.

  5. Won't hurt a thing.

  6. It will be difficult to install a blank plate over a receptacle, the screws which hold the blank plate go into the holes that hold the receptacle in place. The receptacle cover s***w is in the middle between the outlets.

It could be done but you risk shock when you remove the outlet screws. This will loosen the receptacle in the box. Be careful and turn off the power first.

It would be much easier to install a set of anti-shock covers that plug into the outlets.

Personally, I would remove the receptacle if I had no plans to use it. The black wires would wirenut together, the whites together, and the greens together, then put a blank plate over the box.

  7. nope,

    cover it up.
