  1. the other answer was technically correct , the possative wire goes to ground etc, but there are huge differences in the parts! most the parts were designed around this system and if you happened to be a yank (like me) and not realise this is a posative ground (like me once) you get to learn the hard way replacing blown parts.

  2. The word "earth" in the US is usually called "ground" and in a car, the negative terminal on the battery is usually connected to the frame of the vehicle, or "ground." The frame then becomes one conductor, like a huge wire.

On some cars, particularly older cars, the postive terminal was often connected to ground. It doesn't change anything. There is nothing different about the battery. Current still flows in the same direction. And there is no particular reason to have it one way or the other. It's just that modern convention is to use negative for ground.

  3. On a closed DC system like an automobile, "earth" or "ground" really refers to "common".  The frame of the vehicle is the common point for electrical devices, and it can be either (+) or (-), depending on which battery post is tied to the frame.  The electricity really doesn't care -- current still flows positive to negative (electrons actually flowing negative to positive), it just goes through the frame first.

With the battery (-) connect to the frame each device gets +12V feed from a wire connected to battery (+) (probably through a fuse), and it's other wire (the return path) is tied to the frame.  In a "positive grounded" vehicle,  the device gets +12V from the frame, and is wired back to the battery (-).

Many years ago, US car makers settled on have a (-) "common ground" because it lowers the liklihood of corrosion forming from electrolysis, I don't know the science behind it.

  4. you just install the battery backwards..

  5. It doesn't the product it's connect to changes the way it being used> Triumpth car yrs back were pos ground>

Some old tractors were pos ground> Connect up wrong smoke city>
