Question:

Electrical problem: Outlets not working?

I have a couple outlets in a bedroom not working. It's a family member's bedroom, not mine, and they say it hasn't been working for a week. Whether it's a week or a year or 20 years, I don't know.

There are other outlets in the room that work fine. The ones that don't work are on the same wall. The heater thermostat is also on this wall and also doesn't work.

We replaced the outlets first. Didn't work.

We then replaced all breakers in the breaker box that we couldn't find a use for. Still didn't work.

Not sure what to do at this point. If it's true that these were working just last week, what could possibly cause this? Again, the outlets have been swapped out, the breakers have been swapped out (we don't even know which breaker it's on, but we've gone through the process of either ensuring the breaker is connected to something that works, or just replacing the breaker when a use couldn't be found for it). Any help as to what to do next is appreciated!

  1. Check the plug on either side that you think it might be fed from........you may have a loose wire.......the other thing to check is somewhere in the house may be a tripped gfci switch.........and it could be on the o.s. wall just opposite where you are..........those are 2 easy one's and quik to check. and fix............good luck

  2. The other answer is good, you also may have a receptacle that is controlled by a wall switch.  A broken wire or loose connection is always possible.

  3. The best thing to do is call a pro, you could have a short, that might start a fire. Is the wireing old? Are all of the breakers have a name on them where they go to? You might have a separate electrical box for that room too.

If you want to try this, unplug everything in the house. Have someone at the breaker box, take a lamp and have another person, to start pluging in at each outlet, and write it down, the breakers are numbered 1,2,3, and so on. The breaker has on and off written on them. If you have breakers not in use, try them also with the light or lamp, and name them. if a breaker pops to the off position when you try to turn it on. make sure it stays off and call a pro.
