I have a 2001 Mercury Mountaineer with 64K and the electrical system in the car shorts out when I shut the rear hatch. If i leave the hatch open all electronics work fine. When I shut it sometimes the dome lights come on randomly as well as the headlamps. Do i just replace the hatch motor, or does anyone have any other ideas as to what the problem is?

  1. check the harness boot between the body and hatch, you should be able to pull it loose to see the wires ,a common problem is the wires break and short against each other . your hatch motor is not the problem .

  2. Its not the hatch motor, it is the hatch LOCK!!!! replace the power lock SOLINOID ASSEMBLY, and that will cure the problem. Your headlights are on the same curcuit from the fuse panel !!!
