Electricity bill questions, any input?

In the last 2 months ( I live in FL) our electric bill has gone up by $100. We have switched all our light bulbs to the new ones, unplugged everything, and just saving electric all around, but yet it has still gone up. I understand its the summer time and much hotter. Our average bill is about $260 now....my question really is....is this typical for anyone else...for our house?...Im looking to see if this is average (according to Progress Energy it is)..or if it seems totally wrong. THank you everyone!

  1. I am having the SAME problem! We also live in Florida (Central).  We have me, my fiance & our 3 year old daughter living in the house.  Our electricity bill was usually about $160 a month.  Last month it jumped to $260!  I was VERY suprised!  I thought maybe because it was summer time and I am pregnant this summer so it's even HOTTER for me, that was the reason.  But I wasn't the only one.  Everyone else I know went up atleast $100 also.  I looked up the website to our electricity company, Sumter Electric and their site says that gas prices were raising for electricity also!  I was stunned!  A friend of ours has city water (we have well water), and even her water bill went up by $100!  This economy is crazy...

  2. Good Day! I sympathize with all who go through the rising prices. There seems to be no end to this. I live in MO and I am going through the same thing, but not paying $260, but I have family and friends in Florida who are.

They have even done what you have done, but nothing has really changed. It's hearbreaking. As you may already know paying ones electricity bills is even more important than paying off credit cards, phone bills, etc and that may be one reason why they can do whatever they want when it comes to your electric bills.

This is one solution my sister came up with, stop paying the CEOs, millions of dollars, so as to cut costs and that may help reduce the electric bills. I don't kow that may work, but as we all know, it will not be done. They are all GREEDY.

You have a great day. I also sent you a private message.

  3. I'm in Florida, too, and was shocked at my most recent electric bill. Pull out a bunch of your old electric bills and look at the cost per kilowatt hour that they are charging you. My guess is that it's gone up considerably.

You can always go online and sign in to your account to see your usage over the past year. That will tell you if it's you or them.

My guess is, it's them raising your rates to cover their costs...plus their huge profit, as well.
