Consider a galvanic cell made from a silver electrode in 0.50 M AgNO3(aq) and a cadmium electrode in 0.001 M Cd(NO3)2 (aq). Write an overall rxn that occurs and determine the cell potential.

  1. Standard potention, E(0) for cadmium = -0.4, silver = +0.7996

    at 0.001 M Cd(NO3)2, E=-0.4+(0.592/2)lg0.001=-1.288

    at 0.5 M AgNO3, E=+0.7996+(0.592/1)lg0.5=+0.621

    cell potential = 0.621+1.288=1.909 V

    Overall equation

    Cd + 2Ag(+) --> Cd(2+) + 2Ag
